How we picked the best 43-inch TVs
There are hundreds of options when you’re shopping for 43-inch TVs, so how did we pick the best 5?
43-inch TVs are adaptable for a number of different uses, so it wasn’t as simple as choosing the models with the best picture quality. We also wanted to highlight TVs that are perfect for different scenarios, including an outdoor TV and a Samsung TV with a really unique feature.
However ultimately, we do need to circle back around to the overall picture and sound quality. We prioritize picture because you can always improve sound with a soundbar anyway, but it’s still worth bearing in mind any sound tech too.
With a 43” TV you’ll definitely want to make sure you get one with 4K resolution support, but also look out for manufacturers’ signature screen technologies too. The biggest differences in this screen size are between your regular LED TVs and those that take the picture quality to a different level – specifically Samsung’s Neo QLED screens and LG’s OLED.
LG’s C2 OLED series are highly recommended TVs that boast some amazing features, particularly for those who are into gaming. We will delve into the 43″ model later but for those looking for an in-depth review of this product, check out this comprehensive review here.
They’re pricey though, and value for money does come into it. So, we’ve also picked out a fantastic LED TV from Sony that offers plenty of features to enhance the picture quality of whatever you watch, but with enough change left over from $1,000 to pick up a great quality soundbar too.
Product Reviews
- Incredible contrast and deep blacks
- Perfect for console or PC gaming
- Brighter than previous OLED models
- Not as bright as QLED
- Costly
While the LG C2 may still be the go-to choice for most people looking for a 43-inch (or near 43-inch TV) in this case, the LG C3 is one of the absolute best options for those wanting the latest and greatest.
Like the other sets in the series, the C3 boasts an incredible OLED display, which as you likely know is known for its intense contrast and crisp image. As with many of the more premium TVs on the market, the LG C3 is HDMI 2.1 compatible and has a number of welcome features for both everyday viewing and more specific usage.
The LG C3 is actually one of the best gaming TVs around thanks to its HDMI 2.1 compatibility, 120hz refresh rate, VRR and ALLM, and even Nvidia G-Sync – all of which are features you’d expect to see on some of the best HDMI 2.1 monitors on the market.
Now OLEDs in general don’t typically get as bright as QLED displays, which can make them better for darker rooms – but there have been some small improvements to the C3’s brightness when compared against the C2. For most people, the visible difference will be slight, however.
Overall though, this is a TV that’s well worth looking into if budget is no option and you’re looking for something outstanding for gaming.
- The brightest indoor TV
- Incredible clarity
- Excellent sound technology
- Contrast isn’t as defined as OLED
- Needs a Samsung soundbar to maximize sound
Samsung’s QLED technology, while lacking in the contrast depth of OLED, has surpassed it in terms of brightness at least. This has only been enhanced with the Neo-QLED ranges, which use Mini LEDs to provide much more focused local dimming. It’s not as good as turning off individual pixels but the gap is closing.
Neo-QLED TVs also don’t have the concerns over a lifespan that an OLED might, which will burn out faster and could risk screen burn-in.
This TV has some excellent sound technology too, with Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound PLUS, which uses multiple directional speakers to make it seem like the sound is traveling across the room. It also has Q-Symphony tech to sync your TV and soundbar perfectly, but to take advantage you’ll need an (expensive) Samsung soundbar too.
- Great balance between quality and cost
- Optimized for PS5 gaming
- Not the brightest – suffers in daylight
- Low contrast – blacks often look blue
The X85K is one of the entry-level Bravia TVs for 2023, but many of the more high-end options aren’t available at this screen size. It’s an excellent compromise between picture quality and cost though, thanks to the vibrant TRILUMINOS Pro display and the powerful X1 processor that upscales everything to the sharpest picture possible.
It’s not the brightest screen and the contrast is a little weak but that’s the sacrifice you make for the price. It does have some excellent gaming features though, and unsurprisingly is optimized for PS5 gaming being a Sony TV.
- Super affordable
- Game mode
- Slim bezel design
- No 4K resolution
- Slightly older model
Not all TVs come in 4K, and that makes some 43-inch options perfect if you’re sticking to a budget, but don’t fancy going for the best 24-inch TVs or best 32-inch TVs for that matter.
This Hisense A4 series TV is 1080p, comes in at a super affordable price, and has some surprising features, such as a game mode that reduces input lag. Now this may not blow away any of the OLED or QLED options at this size, but it will deliver the goods for everyday usage – whether that’s streaming Netflix or YouTube, or some casual gaming.
In terms of design, it’s also one of the better-looking budget TVs we’ve come across, which is important especially if you’re using it in a guest room.
Overall, we think this TV is one of the best budget 43-inch TVs you can get.
- Safe to use outdoors
- Bright, 4K picture
- Not suitable for direct sunlight
- Picture and sound quality aren’t the best
- Expensive
Another more specialist TV, this SunBrite model is specifically designed to be used outdoors. It’s up to 2.5 times brighter than a standard LED TV you’d use indoors, making it much more suited to daylight. However, it’s not suitable for direct sunlight and does need to be mounted where there’s shade.
It is weatherproof and rustproof though and can withstand sub-zero temperatures as well as highs of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so you don’t have to unmount it every time there’s a weather spike.
You won’t enjoy anywhere near as good a picture as the OLED or Neo-QLED TVs, or even the Sony X85K. But if you like the idea of sitting on your deck, grill fired up and the big game on the screen then this is a solid and reliable TV that won’t be dull or faded. Just a shame about the hefty price tag, but that’s what keeps it safe for outdoor use
43-inch TV buying guide
As with all tech, there’s a tonne to consider when you’re picking the right one for you. Let’s take a look at some of the key things you’ll want to factor into your decision-making process.
Screen type
With many of the best 43-inch TVs being 4K-ready, your first consideration should be the screen type. Most TVs of this size will be regular LEDs, but there are better options. Neo-QLED TVs use much smaller LEDs with a quantum matrix layer to provide the brightest picture with great local dimming, but OLED is unrivaled for contrast with individual pixels being able to shut off completely.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Nowadays it’s almost difficult to find a TV that doesn’t have HDR, and that’s a good thing. HDR allows for more contrast, making blacks appear deeper, whites appear brighter and color more vivid. They are different HDR certifications, and with TVs it can get quite confusing as certain brands have their own HDR certifications. As a rule of thumb, keep an eye out for HDR 10 if you’re looking for a quality viewing experience.
TV Types
There are many, many different types of TV and they are, as expected, very confusing to understand. There are three popular types of TV, which are OLED, QD-OLED, and mini-led. OLED TVs have self illuminating pixels, so they can literally ‘turn off’. This means blacks will look incredibly dark, giving an ultra-realistic look to whatever you’re watching. The only downside is that OLED TVs tend not to be the brightest when compared to other types of backlit TVs. For a brighter option that still delivers on contrast, you may want to consider QD-OLED TVs. They provide brilliant contrast, but are on the whole brighter than most OLED TVs, making them a good choice for well lit rooms. You may not need this for a 43-inch TV, but it certainly helps. Mini LED TVs are the next option and are generally cheaper than OLED and QD-OLED sets. They provide brilliant, crisp color, good contrast, and brightness.
Processor
The processor is also a vital consideration. Just like in a computer, the processor in your TV is the brain of the operation, and better processors can do a much better job of improving the picture quality and upscaling older content to make it as sharp and vivid as possible.
Sound technology
Key sound technologies to look out for are DTS Digital Surround or Dolby Atmos, which work with compatible speakers to provide the full surround sound effect at home. Also look out for manufacturer-specific tech to enhance the audio experience even more, with directional speakers built-in to remove the need for a home cinema setup.
Audio
For most TVs, you should expect amazing audio, as the slim design doesn’t lend itself well to big, powerful, bassy speakers. We’d advise going for a quality soundbar, preferably one of the best soundbars for under $200, to enhance your audio experience without spending a fortune!
Gaming features
Many of the latest TVs are optimized for gaming, including HDMI 2.1 inputs for 4K gaming at 120fps, GSYNC or FreeSync tech for enhanced graphic card compatibility, or dedicated modes designed to make sure the fast-paced action doesn’t become a messy blur. Sony TVs even have special features designed to get the most out of PlayStation consoles.
Bezels
This is more to do with how the TV looks in your chosen room, but we think the thinner the better when it comes to 43-inch TVs. What you’ll find is that at the more budget end of the spectrum, the bezels will be thicker and honestly – less attractive. Spending around $400 -$500 should mean you get a TV that performs well, but also adds a stylish touch to your home!
Is a 43-inch TV too small?
If you only have limited space (but higher than for a 32-inch TV) then 43-inch is a good size. The Best 43-inch TVs offer great feature sets and performance and support 4K Ultra HD content too. Sets this size are good for more modest rooms or spaces, and slightly more modest budgets. If size matters to you then maybe getting the best 70-inch TV is what you’re looking for these are perfect for creating e cinematic experience, especially when paired with the right wall-mounts.
Is 4K worth it on a 43-inch TV?
Some people argue that 4K isn’t worth it on a 43-inch TV, especially if you sit more than a few feet from the screen. However, many others can detect the difference, and with some TVs doubling as gaming monitors that sharpness will be valuable from a shorter distance.
How far should you sit from a 43-inch TV?
Many people claim that you should sit at an optimal distance from a TV to enjoy the best image clarity without straining your eyes. That distance is between 1.5 and 2.5 times the screen size in inches. So, for a 43-inch TV, that optimal distance is between 5.5 feet and 9 feet.
Our Verdict
We’d say the best 43-inch TV out there right now is the LG C3. It’s designed with gaming in mind and boasts a load of features that on paper make it sound more like an amazing gaming monitor. Pair this with a PS5, Xbox Series X, or a high-end gaming PC, and check out how good your games look. On the other side, it’s incredible, improved OLED panel still delivers the goods – and with a slightly brighter display this time around, it’s even a good option for well-lit rooms too.
